The web’s first photograph approaches 20 year anniversary
The web’s first ever photograph — a grainy GIF of an all-female, physics-themed parody band — is approaching its 20th birthday, according to a report from Motherboard. The image, shown above, depicts “Les Horribles Cernettes,” a group which regularly performs at CERN’s annual Hadronic Music Festival.

Casio QV-10, the first consumer LCD digital camera, lauded as ‘essential’ to tech history
You might not be familiar with Casio’s QV-10, but it was a revolutionary product back in 1995 — the world’s first consumer-grade digital camera to come with an LCD for previewing and viewing images. Now, to recognize the contribution the QV-10 made to the rise in popularity of digital photography, Japan’s National Museum of Nature and Science has given it the status of “Essential Historical Material for Science and Technology.” It’s the third Casio product to receive the accreditation after the Mini electronic calculator and the prototype DC-90 digital camera.
Sir Tim Berners-Lee inventing the World Wide Web during his time as a researcher at the CERN laboratory is part of the Internet’s fabled history, but there’s another twist in the tale — it turns out that the Web as we know it actually came to fruition in France, not Switzerland as many had assumed. Back before the internet, it was so much fun to discover obscure bands and share them with your friends. If you discovered something everyone else loved, then you were the coolest. Now everything gets discovered so fast, nothing stays hidden. Maybe that’s a good thing? I don’t know.
