Spotify for iPhone updated with new interface
Spotify has just updated its mobile app for iPhone with a new interface that puts it on par with last year’s overhauled Android version. There are a few big changes to the interface, and the most prominent is the addition of a swipe-across menu that lets you jump the different section of the app. If you’ve used the Facebook app for iOS, it’s virtually identical.
Metroon for iOS theme brings Windows 8 interface to the iPhone
If you’re eagerly awaiting Microsoft’s Windows 8 Metro interface, due in late October, then you might be interested in obtaining it a little earlier for an iPhone or iPod Touch. Metroon, a Dreamboard theme for jailbroken iOS devices, does just that — providing a near-perfect replica of Microsoft’s Metro interface.
Microsoft explains the making of the Windows 8 touch keyboard
Microsoft has posted its latest entry on the Building Windows 8 blog exploring some of the ergonomic and functionally challenging aspects of typing on a touchscreen versus a more traditional keyboard. Samsung designer Golden Krishna: ‘Our love for the digital interface is out of control’
Golden Krishna, Senior Designer at Samsung Innovation Labs, wants to upend the way we think about user interfaces. “Our love for the digital interface is out of control,” he says. “It has become our answer to everything.” If he has his way, the future of Samsung consumer electronics might work more like the Nest thermostat, which learns about your favorite temperature, or a Mercedes-Benz automobile, which automatically unlocks when it detects the keys in your pocket.
Facebook redesigns News Feed with multiple feeds and ‘mobile-inspired’ interface
Facebook has announced a redesigned News Feed that separates streams of content into multiple categories and optimizes the user interface with a “mobile-inspired” design. Describing the goal of News Feed as providing a “personalized newspaper,” Mark Zuckerberg says it’s being changed to take advantage of more photo and other visual content sharing, as well as the difference between personal stories and posts from public figures. “We want updates from our friends, but we also want updates from publications” and others.
Netflix introduces one unified TV interface to rule them all
Watch Netflix instant streaming on your television and you know what content you’ll get — but you likely won’t know how you’ll find it. Whether it’s the PlayStation 3, Roku, or the Apple TV, every flavor of Netflix is slightly different, creating interface and feature fragmentation that’s in stark contrast to the ubiquity of the service itself.
40 years of icons: the evolution of the modern computer interface
Jesse Hicks on the history of the GUI:
“The Alto cemented some aspects, but the Xerox Star was where it all came together,” says Bruce Dormer, a user interface expert who maintains a collection of vintage computers at the Digibarn. “That’s where you had something that looked beautiful and was functional. It was a complete system launched in April 1981. Everyone looked at that like, ‘Oh my god, this is like a spaceship from the future that has just landed on the front lawn.’” Microsoft was one early customer.
LG’s new webOS interface is a smart, simple, but occasionally jittery way to navigate your TV
The CES show floor is officially open, and we’ve finally got a chance to take LG’s new webOS TV interface for a spin. There’s little doubt that LG has come up with a clever and simple way to run your TV, compared to the commonly overwrought interfaces seen on most other smart TVs. Unfortunately, the product also showed some flaws due to the combination of a tough CES connectivity environment and early-stage software.
Why should we have to spend so much time dealing with our computer’s interface? Jef Raskin, the man behind the original Macintosh and author of The Humane Interface often wondered the same thing, and his desire for a forgiving, document-based UI led Canon to create its Cat “work processor,” a re-imagining of what office computing should be like. | The Verge
Microsoft advises developers to stop using ‘Metro’ name in apps following possible trademark dispute
Microsoft has started to notify its Windows developers that they should refrain from using the word “Metro” throughout their applications if they refer to the Windows Phone or Windows 8 interface. Instead, the company is advising developers to use “New User Interface” to describe Microsoft’s unified design. One source, who wishes to remain anonymous, tells us that the change could be related to a dispute between Microsoft and a German company over the use of the Metro naming. Developers have been informed that they shouldn’t use the term any more in apps or associated documentation.
